At MyoMindset, my goal is to guide you towards better health and well-being, helping you eat, sleep, breathe, and live better. I believe that myofunctional therapy can be an integral part of this journey. Let’s work together to enhance your well-being. We will create a personalized plan that fits your unique needs and goals.

What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy consists of exercises that help patients change habits and strengthen muscles related to their oral functions. This therapy enhances tongue placement, breathing, speaking, chewing, and swallowing, leading to improved overall health and well-being.

The treatment addresses the movement and function of the tongue and oral muscles. Issues like snoring, mouth breathing, daily headaches, TMJ pain, teeth shifting after braces, allergies, and even ADHD may seem common but are not normal. Chronic symptoms do not equate to normalcy; dysfunction is never normal. What if you could train your body, mouth, and tongue to work for you instead of against you? Myofunctional therapy aims to achieve this, and we will work towards that goal together!

Meet Dianne

Hello, my name is Dianne Essary!

I was born and raised in Hawaii, where I lived until I moved to Oregon to pursue an education in dental hygiene. My journey as a lifelong learner took a significant turn in 2014 when I attended a continuing education class on sleep breathing disorders in adults. That class completely changed my perspective on what I thought I knew.

In 2018, when I had my first son, I began to see the world through a different lens—a mom’s lens. Though I adored my new baby, he struggled with sleep, snoring like a growling bear when he did manage to rest. Like many toddlers, he also had temper tantrums that seemed endless. Despite being told by others that these experiences were “normal,” I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. My friends with children didn’t share the same stories, but with no answers available, I was left to accept the situation.

Over the years, I continued to take more classes, and one course in particular became a game changer: myofunctional therapy. It was the key that made everything click. Suddenly, the term “common” replaced “normal” in my vocabulary. For the first time, I understood why my child struggled to sleep, snored like a bear, and had intense tantrums—it was all about his airway and the fact that he wasn’t breathing to his full capacity, preventing his body from thriving.

But this section is supposed to be all about me, so here’s a secret: I’m deeply passionate about myofunctional therapy because I’ve experienced the same complaints you may have all my life and did not recognize it until my course. Like you, I was told that my clenching, neck and shoulder pain, and even the shifting of my teeth after three rounds of braces were “normal.” Seeking chiropractic care and massage therapy seemed to slice off the tip of the iceberg when it came to pain management—it was always a waiting game for the next fleeting moment of relief. No one ever told me that muscle dysfunction in my face and mouth was the real cause.

Now, here I am, shouting from the rooftop that I can help—so you don’t have to do it alone! Like many moms, I don’t want my children to go through what I did. But I feel the same way about my friends, family, and clients. I want everyone in my circle to breathe better, feel better, and thrive. That’s why I’m here—to help you become YOU again.

FAQs

Who can benefit from orofacial myofunctional therapy?

OMT may benefit those who suffer from: Obstructive sleep apnea, snoring, allergies/asthma, dental malocclusion (crowded teeth), orthodontic relapse/stability, tonsil and ear infections, tempromandibular joint (TMJ) pain, neck pain, thumb sucking or pacifier use, bedwetting.

What are the benefits of orofacial myofunctional therapy?

Proper breathing, reduction in teeth grinding, reduced nasal obstruction, reduction in sleep apnea episodes, straighter teeth, better facial symmetry, improved posture, better sleep, improved attention span, ability to move oral muscles properly, nail biting and other oral habits.

How long does treatment take?

Treatment can range from 3-8 months for adults and 3-6 months for children . But this is not a rule, it depends on the chief complaint, motivation of the patient and if any other therapy/ treatment modalities are involved.

How does therapy work?

After our free phone consultation, you can schedule a comprehensive evaluation. If you’re already certain that myofunctional therapy is right for you, you can skip the phone consult. Following your evaluation, you’ll receive a therapy tool kit—be sure to keep it safe, as replacements come at an additional cost. Once you have your kit, we can begin your first therapy session. Therapy appointments typically occur every 2-3 weeks and last 30-45 minutes.

Where is therapy located?

Therapy is available virtually, making it easier to keep appointments and fit them into your busy schedule, ensuring your success.

How often are therapy sessions?

Plan to meet every 2-3 weeks for 20-45 minute appointments.

Will insurance cover this?

Myofunctional therapy is a specialized service often not covered by insurance, making out-of-pocket costs a challenge. However, it’s a valuable investment that can prevent larger issues down the road. I believe excellent care shouldn’t be dictated by insurance, which is often designed to deny claims. Submitting and following up on claims is a full-time job, so as a solo practitioner, I prefer to focus on patient care. This approach helps keep your costs lower and reduces stress. Payment plans are available, and you can use HSA/FSA benefits.
