Why don’t you take insurance?

Myofunctional therapy is a premium, highly specialized service often not covered by insurance. While I understand that paying out of pocket can be challenging, I firmly believe that myofunctional therapy is a valuable investment that can prevent more significant issues in the future.

I believe that excellent care is paramount and should not be limited by insurance coverage. To make this health investment more affordable, I offer payment plans. From my experience, insurance companies often prioritize denial, making it a full-time job to submit and follow up on claims, chase payments, and contest denials. As a solo practitioner, I prefer to dedicate my time to patient care rather than dealing with insurance companies. This approach keeps your costs lower and minimizes stress for everyone involved. (You can still use your HSA/FSA benefits.)

What is a tongue tie?

Tongue tie, or ankyloglossia, is a condition where a tight band of tissue, the lingual frenulum, restricts tongue movement. This can affect breastfeeding in infants, speech development in children, and lead to complications like TMJ disorders, sleep apnea, digestive issues, and oral health problems in adults.

Determining the need for a tongue tie release should not rely solely on appearance. An oral function assessment by a myofunctional therapist or a release provider is essential to evaluate tongue function, appearance, and symptoms. Treatment typically involves a simple surgical procedure called frenotomy or frenuloplasty to improve tongue mobility.

Why is myofucntional therapy needed before and after a tongue tie release?

To optimize outcomes and ensure the success of a tongue tie release procedure.

Before Tongue Tie Release:

  1. Enhancing Function: Myofunctional therapy prepares the tongue muscles and tissues before surgery to improve strength, coordination, and range of motion for better outcomes.
  2. Facilitating Healing: It addresses orofacial muscle imbalances to support proper healing and recovery after the release procedure.
  3. Establishing Healthy Habits: The therapy helps develop correct oral habits, such as optimal tongue posture, proper swallowing, and nasal breathing, promoting lasting functional changes.

After Tongue Tie Release:

  1. Rehabilitation and Retraining: After the release, myofunctional therapy helps retrain the tongue and orofacial muscles, preventing reattachment and ensuring optimal function.
  2. Correcting Compensatory Habits: It addresses issues like improper swallowing, speech patterns, and mouth breathing, promoting healthy orofacial function and preventing long-term problems.
  3. Enhancing Overall Function: The therapy optimizes tongue function, improves oral posture, and encourages proper swallowing and breathing, positively impacting speech, dental health, facial development, sleep, and overall quality of life.

By incorporating myofunctional therapy both before and after a tongue tie release, individuals can maximize the benefits of the procedure and experience long-term functional improvements in oral and facial function.

Why is Myofucntional therapy used for orthodontic, corrective jaw surgery and oral sleep appliance retention?

Myofunctional therapy is crucial for orthodontic, corrective jaw surgery and oral appliance retention as it targets the essential oral muscles responsible for maintaining stable treatment results. By addressing muscle imbalances and incorrect oral habits, myofunctional therapy prevents relapse and supports long-term tooth and jaw alignment. Improved muscle function helps maintain proper tooth positioning, facial aesthetics, and overall oral health. Integrating myofunctional therapy with treatment optimizes retention and extends the longevity of orthodontic, corrective jaw surgery and oral sleep appliance outcomes.

How can Myofucntional Therapy help with my TMJ pain?

Frequently, TMJ pain stems from muscular compensations rather than a structural issue in the jaw joint itself. Myofunctional therapy addresses the underlying cause of the pain by enhancing jaw mobility and strengthening the muscles involved in supporting optimal jaw function. By targeting these factors, myofunctional therapy aims to alleviate TMJ pain at its root cause.

How can Myofucntional Therapy help with Sleep apnea?

Myofunctional therapy can be beneficial in addressing sleep apnea by targeting the underlying causes and contributing factors of the condition. Through exercises and techniques, it focuses on strengthening the muscles of the tongue, throat, and face, which helps improve airway function and reduce obstruction during sleep. By promoting proper tongue posture, swallowing patterns, and nasal breathing, myofunctional therapy can contribute to better airflow and reduced episodes of apnea. Additionally, it can help address habits such as mouth breathing and improper oral muscle function that may contribute to sleep apnea. Integrating myofunctional therapy as part of a comprehensive treatment plan can enhance the management and outcomes of sleep apnea.
